Lorraine Marlene Sando
August 17, 1931 to
November 25, 2005
Lorraine was born
August 17 in Tacoma, Washing and grew up
in West Seattle and graduated from West Seattle High School. She attended
the University of Washington where she met and married Jack Sando. They
lived in Connecticut for 5 years where Jack was a field engineer for the
Phil Corporation. Then they returned to Washington to raise their 3 sons -
David, Don and Rich.
Lorraine received her
master in Psychology from Antioch University. She worked as a marriage and
family therapists and was influenced by her ten years of study with Virginia
Satir. As she said many times she "adopted many of Virginia's philosophies
and methodologies with my own clients."
Lorraine as an artist
was influenced and mentored by Kanchoo, a prominent Seattle artist. Lorraine
said she was encouraged by him and was therefore able to
recognize and expand her innate talent. Lorraine passed this encouragement
in her teachings to beginning artists. Several of her students expressed
their gratitude for her way to make them feel creative.
Lorraine said: I see
painting and drawing as a sacred act, a process that invites you to partner
with the creative force within to discover the mysteries of the unknown."
At her memorial several of her paintings were on display.
Lorraine was very
involved with Swedenborgian Church of Kirkland, Washington. As the Reverend
Eric Allison shared at Lorraine's service, Lorraine did training and
programs for the Church in a combination of Satir and Art.
Beginning of the summer
of 2005, Lorraine suffered from different types of infections and pneumonia.
After several months of hospitalization and realizing how ill she was, she
in talking with her family, decided to terminate treatment. She died in the
evening of November 25th surrounded by her family.
Lorraine is survived by
her sons and daughters-in-laws David and Barbara of New Zealand, Donald and
Linda of Washington, and Richard and Sarah of Washington. She has four
grandchildren: Kayla, Devin, Zach and Lauren. Four Nieces and nephew: Gayle,
Janice, Diana and Darren. And one brother Richard of Phoenix, Arizona.
