Reflections: An Oral History of Virginia Satir
$20.00
Developed and Presented by Jesse Carlock, Ph.D
Virginia Satir, one of the foremost
therapists and educators in the United States and abroad, was also one of
the founders of the family therapy modality and an early proponent of global
peace. While Satir died in 1988, her work lives on through her students and
colleagues, many of whom remain members in a network she established known
as Avanta, the Virginia Satir Network.
Dr. John Banmen,
a first generation follower of the Satir Model, recognized the need to
create an oral history of Virginia Satir through the voices of some of her
earliest followers. Dr. Banmen recruited Dr. Jesse Carlock who volunteered
her time to spearhead this project. With skeletal financial backing from
Avanta, Dr. Carlock began traveling around the country videotaping
interviews with elders in Avanta about their experiences with Virginia Satir
and her work. The DVD she created, Reflections: An Oral History of Virginia
Satir, Part I., is a composite of excerpts from 20 of these interviews. Many
of the people included in these interviews, some in their 80s and 90s, knew
Satir during her earliest years as a professional. The DVD includes
intimate reflections about Virginia Satir, the person, commentary about her
work and contributions, and thoughts about Satir's impact both personally
and professionally.
In the spirit of Satir’s beliefs and
values, she is shown in the DVD not as a saint, but, respectfully, in all her
humanity. One of Satir’s strongest relational assets was her willingness to
meet people in a human, "navel to navel" way. Human, yet at the same time a
creative genius and visionary, Satir’s greatness shines through. Enjoy!
- Jesse Carlock
Reflections is
intended as the first of a series of DVDs which will document the
experiences of first, second, and third generation Avantans with Virginia
Satir and her model.

"People Making in a
Changing World"
$35.00
Jean
Houston's One Day Presentation at the 2006 Satir Conference on August 10th
"In a time of whole system
transition where change is a rule and the only expected is the unexpected, how
can we grow ourselves and others to meet the demands of our time?" From Jean's
decades of work with people and culture, and using Virginia Satir messages in
her concept of The New People Making, Dr. Houston offered a day long
adventure into the new profession of midwifing the possible human and the
possible society.
This DVD set is a live recording of Jean's
one day presentation. Jean weaves Virginia's teaching into her presentation.
The 2 DVD set is 5-1/2 hours long. The DVDs are divided so as to separate
different parts of the presentation. For example the first part is Jean's
explanation of the world and the many changes we are experiencing about the
emerging global culture, about peace, and leadership.
Jean demonstrates the use of story for
teaching, empowerment, and the transformation of skills to resources. She
directs, with participants role playing, a story of seven brothers and their
skills in the rescuing of a princess. This story and the role playing engages
the audience as it takes places in front of them.
The rest of the day is divided into the
skills, gifts, and transformation of each brother and its universal
applications. Jean does this by explanation, by exercises, and by applications
to self, organizations, and different cultures.
For those at the Satir Conference this DVD
set will be a wonderful reminder and a way to increase what was learned. For
those who were not there, it will be a valuable learning opportunity.
Avanta is
offering this DVD set for a limited time. The DVD set is for personal
and educational purposes only.
