What is Avanta?

History: AVANTA® was founded in 1977 by internationally famous family therapist, Virginia Satir, as a forum for the continual evolution of Satir theory and practice, its practitioners, and the world community. In 2007, we changed our name to THE VIRGINIA SATIR GLOBAL NETWORK to reflect our global community. We have members in over 20 countries, with 21 Institutes on five continents. We operate from its headquarters in SeaTac, Washington. It is governed by an 8-member volunteer board, and is designated a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Mission:

To further the creation of healthy and just relationships with self and others based on the teachings of Virginia Satir.

Vision:

We see it happening. A universal shift in thought, feeling, and action that opens up new possibilities for being together in a world that works for everyone. We see people treating themselves and one another increasingly as the miracles of light and life they are. The Virginia Satir international community is making unprecedented contributions to this shift.

Resolution of the Board:

Be it resolved that we, The Virginia Satir Global Network, take a stand: to move boldly with our commitment, making a radical positive difference in our world and welcoming all people who want to join us in creating a world that works for everyone.

Therefore:

The Virginia Satir Global Network works to facilitate and model processes of communication, healing, growth and change among people, organizations, and the communities they serve through trainings and educational resources.

Guiding Principles: Built upon the foundation of Virginia Satir® theory and practice, Virginia Satir Global Network's work begins from the following assumptions:

  • Each of us can live in congruence with our unique selves and in harmony with others.

  • The potential for growth and change is inherent.

  • Positive evolution personally and globally is not only possible but also essential.

Services: Members of The Virginia Satir Global Network produce educational programs/events in North America and around the world each year. Topics include Virginia Satir® theory and practice, diversity, trauma, grief and loss, and sustaining service. Some members of The Virginia Satir Global Network also offer custom on-site training in diversity, conflict resolution, sustaining service, and effective communication to corporate clients, both non- and for-profit. A few of our current clients include the National Court Appointed Special Advocates Association, Correctional Services of Canada, King County Housing Authority, United Way of King County, and the University of Washington School of Nursing.

What makes Virginia Satir Global Network's training different?

  • Interactive: Participants actively co-create their learning experience.

  • Practical: Programs offer skills and tools that can be immediately applied both personally and professionally.

  • Self-Modeling: Presenters model the skills and tools that they teach - they "walk their talk".

Audiences Served: Although many of the Virginia Satir Global Network's programs are open to (and appropriate for) any and all interested people, we believe one of the greatest strengths of our approach lies in serving those who serve their communities. If, as the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child, then we are committed to serving the villagers who in turn serve their communities. These include health care and mental health professionals, educators, social workers, consultants, etc.
